Names to Know: Amanda Wong


In honour of International Women’s Day this year we’ve asked Amanda Wong, TELUS Marketing Manager and National Chair for the Diversity & Inclusiveness Council, how she paved her career path and what tips she would offer aspriring young professionals. Here’s what she had to say:

  1. How would you describe your role at TELUS?

When I was young, I loved going to the beach, flipping over rocks to see what treasures were underneath and deciding which ones to keep. That’s the kind of work that our team does – we “flip over rocks” to find opportunities and work to figure out which ones are most valuable to improving experiences for our team members and customers.

I actually play two roles at TELUS; both of which I’m very proud of. Currently, I’m the Senior Marketing Manager on the Journey Design and Delivery team. Our team works directly with customers and our Operations teams to design customer journeys. Creating great customer journeys means making it easier for our frontline team members to deliver an exceptional experience and making it easier for our customers to do business with us. It’s a new team within the organization, so every day is an exciting challenge.

In my other role at TELUS, I proudly serve as the National Chair of the Diversity & Inclusiveness Council. I think we sometimes take for granted how TELUS supports its team members and encourages us to be active participants in this diversity journey. I have the privilege of working alongside 22 exceptional team members from across the organization; we’re aiming to have our pipeline of top talent reflect the diversity of our customers and communities at every level of the organization.

These different perspectives, experiences and ways of thinking enable us to spark innovation, achieve our business strategy and put our customers first. We’ve made great progress towards achieving our goals, but driving diversity every day is a challenging journey.  But I’m happy to be part of this team and take on this challenge!

  1. What steps in your career and education led you here? Any tips for emerging professionals?

I took a unique path getting to where I am today. While I was completing my Bachelor of Science at McGill, I picked up a summer job at TELUS – which led to three consecutive summer jobs at TELUS.

I initially had the intention of graduating and working in healthcare management, but as I completed my third summer with TELUS, I realized how great the culture and learning opportunities were at TELUS. I worked for a number of non-profits both during school and post-graduation and it was during these experiences that I finally realized what I wanted to do; I wanted to work for an organization that would help me grow professionally, while also supporting my passion for supporting my community. This led me back to TELUS and I’ve been a proud team member for six years.

In terms of advice, here is what I would said to aspiring professionals:

Be flexible and open to new opportunities. When I was starting out, I said yes to any event, volunteer role and coffee chat available to me. I not only found amazing job opportunities, but great people and experiences that truly reflected my passions.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t meet all the criteria of a job description for a role you’re interested in! Rarely does a candidate check all the requirements of a job. If you’re passionate about the role, feel you can bring something new to the table, and there’s an opportunity for you to learn and grow professionally, apply!

  1. How do you stay fresh and innovative? What keeps you up to date?

It really doesn’t matter what field you’re in, I believe there a few approaches we can all leverage to grow personally and professionally.

In-role development: Do at least one “outside learning” activity every month. For example, read a book, attend a conference or run an external workshop. Here’s a book to get you set on your journey: Gamestorming & Frame Innovation.

Share and listen: For tech trends and consumer experience news, my team does an amazing job at sharing articles and learnings, which really encourage discussion and brainstorming. I personally like reading through LinkedIn interest groups and listening to the Accidental tech podcast.

Future growth: I encourage switching jobs every two years or so; and by switching jobs, I don’t necessarily mean switching companies. TELUS encourages team members to move around teams and business units to gain new perspectives. I’ve been taking full advantage of this option to help me learn and to keep myself motivated. You don’t have to change roles to stay fresh but you at least need to find new ways to challenge yourself.

  1. How has the TELUS culture impacted your role?

I believe our unique differentiator at TELUS is our people. We have folks from different backgrounds bringing their diverse experiences and strengths to the table. We have an incredible leadership team that champions, mentors and supports team members to help them succeed and grow.

On a personal note, I’ve worked with many amazing, talented, ambitious and supportive people. I’ve found some of my closest friends at TELUS and there’s definitely a good balance of getting work done and having fun. Some of the things that I’ve participated in during my time here include: participating in a plank competition, taking part in a Halloween costume runway competition, supporting a throwback Sports Day to raise funds for JDRF, cuddling some critters as part of a puppy therapy afternoon – well, you get the idea. It’s a talented, fun and diverse team that really knows the meaning of supporting the community.

  1. What is something you’ve accomplished at TELUS that you’re really proud of? Why?

I was the recipient of the 2015 TELUS Emerging Leader Award. Receiving the award at the ceremony was an amazing experience, but the real honour was having my nomination, which was submitted by my coworkers and leadership team, read out loud; it was truly humbling. I didn’t realize the impact that my work had on others and the tremendous amount of appreciation that I have for all the people that helped me get where I am today.

I want to give back and ensure that others starting out in their careers have the same opportunities I did. For this reason, I’ve been mentoring co-op students and new team members, while connecting people with our many TELUS resources to expand their networks and help develop new skills outside of their day-to-day jobs.  I feel proud of the award but more proud of the experiences I’ve shared since then.
