Announcing our partners in the TELUS Garden community art program

Art has always been one of my greatest passions and I am a strong believer in the importance of supporting a vibrant and diverse arts scene in our communities. For me, one of the most exciting aspects of our TELUS Garden development is our art program that is designed to showcase the talent of established Canadian artists as well as the unique perspectives of Canadian youth, as expressed through the arts.

In addition to working with two professional artists, Amy Thompson and Brent Comber, on two major installations that will grace the lobby areas of our new corporate home at 510 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver, we are also partnering with three local arts organizations on an exciting endeavour to bring young artists into the spotlight.

After carefully reviewing a number of proposals submitted by community arts groups and artists in the Greater Vancouver area, our jury selected three groups based on their innovative creative concepts for TELUS Garden as well as their longstanding track record of providing high quality arts education and outreach programming to children and youth. Those groups are: Contemporary Art Gallery in partnership with Cineworks, Artists for Kids and Arts Umbrella.

Throughout the summer and fall, these organizations will work with kids of varying ages to create art pieces that will become part of our permanent art collection at TELUS Garden. Contemporary Art Gallery in partnership with Cineworks will work with a group of aspiring filmmakers to produce a documentary that explores the multicultural exchange among first generation Canadians. Artists for Kids is inviting their summer students to create a mobile installation made of copper leaves stamped with personal messages about the future, and Arts Umbrella will guide a group of young artists to develop a story idea and bring it to life through the fabrication of a ceramic work of art.

I want to thank all the arts organizations and artists who took the time to submit proposals for the TELUS Garden community art program and also express my appreciation to our participating artists. I look forward with great anticipation to watching them apply their hearts, minds and hands to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces that communicate their view of the world and our future.
