With fragrant flowers wafting in the air and the warm spring breeze rustling through the trees it’s hard not to be thankful for nature and our planet as Environment Week kicks-off this week.
Our attention is drawn again to the climate and the changes that must be made to the way we view and interact with our environment. For us at TELUS, sustainability is a daily focus with our environmental policy in-hand to guide our actions in setting and meeting environmental objectives and targets. As a team, we have committed to climate change goals from 2010 to 2020:
- Reducing our absolute energy consumption by 10 per cent
- Reducing our absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent
When it comes to the individual level it is sometimes overwhelming to think about what actions I can take to make an impact. With an issue so large, I can’t help but feel small, but I know that each small act that I take causes a ripple effect and can make a difference.
This year for Environment Week TELUS is asking employees to participate in the Commuter Challenge, a fun, national competition celebrating active and sustainable transportation. By tracking our commute online, we can see how our actions can contribute to decreasing our environmental impact in terms of CO2 emissions and the burning of fossil fuels.
I started my week by working from home, therefore cancelling out my commute for Monday. This morning I made 8km trip to the office with the help of public transit and will make my way home the same way, saving 1.43 litres of fuel and will have avoided creating 1.8 kilograms of CO2.
Whether you’re telecommuting, walking, cycling, carpooling/ride-sharing or taking transit logging your commute can help you see the impact you make every day towards our shared environment.
Let’s all try to take action, big and small, this Environment Week!!
