Our TELUS team subscribes to a simple philosophy – we give where we live. As part of TELUS’ Community Affairs team, I get to see this way of thinking come to life; and I’ve seen firsthand how our support of local organizations that are working hard to make sure our communities are caring and vibrant is having a genuine impact.
It’s always exciting to work together with people and organizations whose values align with our own. Because with shared beliefs and shared intentions, I’m confident in our collective ability to have a positive impact in our neighbourhoods and beyond.
With a dedication and determination to make a positive difference for those in his community, Mark Brand of Save-on-Meats in Vancouver is one of those people I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with.
Mark (@eastvanbrand) is a restaurateur and social entrepreneur whose passion for community development is reflected in the vital work he does on Vancouver’s Downtown East Side (DTES). He and his team work in close collaboration with various community programs and initiatives to harness their passion and pursue new, and often unique, approaches to tackling important social issues, such as barriers to employment and food security.
This year, Mark and his team launched their innovative Sandwich Token Program, which allows people to buy meal tokens for $2.25 that provide someone who couldn’t otherwise afford it a nourishing meal. In just nine months, this program has fed 15,000 people and made a huge impact in the DTES.
Quite an accomplishment…but Mark is always looking for the next big idea that will make an even bigger difference for his community and beyond.
“The positive response we get when I talk about what I’m doing on Twitter and Instagram is huge. We get an overwhelming amount of people saying ‘How can I help? Where can I volunteer?,’” says Mark.
“I know the next best idea for social innovation is out there.”
And, that’s where you come in.
