When making a difference hits close to home

I support southern Alberta’s rural areas in my role as a TELUS field support manager in Lethbridge. Outside of work, I’m also really involved in my community as a board director with Volunteer Lethbridge and as a volunteer with various other organizations that help out where I live. One of the things that inspires me to give back is the fact that TELUS does so much to help make my community better…and I want to match that commitment.

Although I know that TELUS does so much to reach out and touch so many, I never really thought that someone I knew would be directly impacted by our charitable giving.

A year ago, my best friend Brett and his wife Allison welcomed their daughter, Lillian, into the world…six weeks early. Because she was premature, Lillian had to stay a while in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. While there, she spent much of her time in a giraffe neonatal isolette used to incubate premature babies.

The hospital had recently bought the isolette, along with other specialized equipment in the NICU, with the funds from a $250,000 TELUS donation to the Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation – the largest single corporate donation they’ve ever received.

The donation was a result of a year-long local TVs for Good and Phones for Good campaign that gave the foundation $100 for every new customer who signed up for Optik TV or activated a smartphone.

If Brett and Allison hadn’t had access to this vital equipment when Lillian was born, who knows how long she might’ve been in the hospital? Not to mention the added blessing that they didn’t have to relocate to Calgary while she was in the NICU. They were able to get the care they needed where they live, and I think that made a huge difference.

We recently celebrated Lillian’s first birthday together and it was really special to me to know that TELUS played a part in helping her make it to this milestone.

I know my company is passionate about making sure our kids start off life on the right foot, and the fact that we’re touching lives and providing that level of healthcare in smaller communities is hugely meaningful.

And, I can be proud that the company I work for is having an impact beyond providing products and services. TELUS’ give where we live philosophy is truly changing lives for the better in my community and throughout Canada.
