This week I had the great pleasure of representing the TELUS team at two exciting events alongside respected industry experts to speak about our company’s commitment to creating green, innovative and inspiring workplaces for our team that are also contributing to healthier and more sustainable communities where we operate.
On Tuesday, I participated in the Vancouver Real Estate Forum panel, which brought people together to look at business and real estate opportunities in British Columbia. They were keenly interested in our TELUS Garden development, particularly around its environmental sustainability standards as one of the first LEED Platinum office buildings in North America. Today I was part of a panel at the Green Living Show in Toronto where there was tremendous interest in the initiatives TELUS has undertaken to demonstrate our commitment to the environment and lead by example by living up to our brand promise – the future is friendly – in everything we do, including our approach to corporate real estate. In fact, TELUS’ real estate strategy and green initiatives are leading our peers globally by building and retrofitting our offices to a minimum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold standard and fostering an increasing mobile workforce to reduce our overall real estate footprint. By providing leading-edge technology such as videoconferencing, Live Meeting, instant messaging and Telepresence solutions, we are moving ideas, not people, and as an organization, we are well on our way to meeting our goal of having 70 percent of our 40,000 team members working from home at least part-time by 2015.
In addition to being able to share what TELUS is doing in this realm, it was also inspiring to learn about what my colleagues on the panels and their organizations are doing to promote sustainability. I am feeling truly encouraged to see that so many of them share TELUS’ passion for corporate social responsibility, and I am excited by the many opportunities that lay before us all in terms of collaborating to create healthier communities for the benefit of all Canadians.
All the best,
