If you’re like most Canadians, you own a smartphone and use it to do just about everything. Your phone is probably the first thing you look at when you wake up and the last thing you see before you go to sleep. You use it to share your morning run success, to snap a pic of your awesome lunch, to buy the latest must-have, and to plan your evening out with friends. Apps, of course, make all of this possible.
But do you know what personal information your apps have access to?
Data such as your photos, messages with friends, personal emails, contacts and even your location can be accessed through your apps and used without your knowledge or consent. In the wrong hands, this information can put you at risk and enable cyber criminals to spam your contacts, use your photos, track your location or even steal your identity.
The good news is that there are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself!
6 ways to fight back and take control of your information
Together with Public Safety Canada, TELUS has developed the following six tips to help you stay safe when using your smartphone.
These tips are a great start, but it doesn’t end there. Through our #BeAppSafe initiative with Public Safety Canada, we’ll be sharing other ways to help you stay safe when using your apps, from now through to the end of March.
